“After the 2017 Legislative Session”
First meeting of the 2017-18 League year.
Social time at 8:30. Program at 9 a.m.
Discussion will focus on state tax structure and school funding, with two speakers: Senator Pat Pettey, a member of the 2017 Select Committee on Education Finance, and longtime policy analyst Paul Johnson, the author of the League of Women Voters of Kansas legislative reports.
Elected in 2012, Sen. Pettey is the ranking minority member on both the transportation committee and the education subcommittee for ways and means. Before the senate, she served as a Unified Government of Wyandotte County and KCK commissioner from 1997 to 2010 and as a state representative from 1992 to 1996. Along with her role in politics, she taught in the Turner School District from 1968 until her retirement in 2006, which gives her a unique perspective on funding K-12 schools.
If you follow “Policy Watch: Weekly Updates From the Kansas Legislature,” you are familiar with Paul Johnson’s work. He started his career as a political reporter. Now, a fixture at the statehouse, Paul advises LWVK’s legislative Observer Corps. He farms near Lawrence and advocates organic agriculture across the state.
