DSA Against Offshore Drilling!

The Trump Administration has announced an all out assault on coastal communities, indigenous communities, and the climate with its recently announced Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing Program otherwise known as the OCS Program. Under the plan over 1,000,000,000 acres of ocean territory will be made available for offshore oil drilling. As we have seen with the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Disaster in 2010, and many other oil spills, this is a murderous idea. There will be more oil spills. These oil spill will threaten the lives and livelihoods of indigenous communities in the Alaskan Arctic in other locations, members of coastal communities who may rely on ocean fish for their work and/or food, and thousands of endangered species. The expansion of these oil wells offshore will also build drilling infrastructure that could lock in decades worth of extreme fossil fuel extraction which threatens to push us deeper into the climate crisis which threatens billions of lives, particularly in island communities and in communities in the global south. We cannot let this OCS program go through without a fight.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), a subsidiary or the Department of the Interior, is holding public hearings between now and February 28 where the public can go and comment on this disastrous plan and we need to shut them down! The hearing in Boston will be on January 24th from 3-7pm at the Hyatt Regency Boston, and DSA will be there! More details to follow…
