Reading Group: This is An Uprising
The SURJ NoVa nonfiction reading group is continuing our reading and discussion of “This is An Uprising” by Mark & Paul Engler, and you’re welcome to join us!
Our reading for this meeting is chapters 7: The Whirlwind.
Last fall, after watching the PBS documentary adaptation of Douglas Blackmon’s “Slavery By Another Name,” we read Michelle Alexander’s “The New Jim Crow” in light of the more recent Movement for Black Lives’ platform. Our reading of “This is An Uprising” follows on Alexander’s insistence that a mass movement rather than minor legal tweaking will be necessary to dismantle the current system of racial control known as mass incarceration.
“This is An Uprising” is widely available through local libraries or bookstores. If you have time and access, you may also prepare by watching “Slavery By Another Name” (free online) and Ava DuVernay’s “13th” (streaming on Netflix) and checking out the Movement for Black Lives platform (free online).
Even if you have not yet attended any of our discussions or read any of the materials, we invite you to join us!
We meet in Wegmans’ upstairs dining area, above the prepared foods department (hot bar, salad bar, pizza, sandwiches, etc.). Feel free to purchase snacks, a meal, and/or a drink on your way up.
