March Against Monsanto – Oak Creek, Colorado

For too long, Monsanto has been the benefactor of corporate subsidies and political favoritism. Organic and small farmers suffer losses while Monsanto continues to forage its monopoly over the world’s food supply, including exclusive patenting rights to seeds and their genetic makeup. Monsanto’s GMO seeds are harmful to the environment, scientist have indicated GMO seeds have caused colony collapse among the world’s bee population!
A study done from 2007 to 2008 showed between 750,000 to a million honeybee colonies died, in the United States alone. Just in the past decade the National Agriculture Statistics Service reported a drop in numbers of bees from more than 5 million to less than 2.5 million bees!
A new study linking Glyphosphate, Monsanto’s active ingredient in Round-Up herbicide, disrupts learning behaviors in honeybees and severely impairs long-term colony performance.
And since bees don’t die immediately when exposed to Glyphosphate, they bring the chemical back to the hive. Larvae are then exposed to the chemical, which can lead to an overall low foraging rate and ultimately leading to the disappearance of the colony altogether. It is thought, that without bees a 1/3 of the worlds food supply would also disappear!
Glyphosphate is commonly used in conjunction with GMO foods, which have been engineered in a lab to survive and tolerate massive amounts of herbicide. The most common herbicide-tolerant GMO foods grown in the United States is corn and soy.
We need to stand up for our organic and small farmers! Farmers should be sticking to their roots, not wearing hazmat suits!! Ask Monsanto, what did you say? How many people did you poison today? Hey Monsanto! We want you to know, we don’t want your GMOs!!
