HB 1494: A Bill that Would Undermine Already Weak Factory Farm Protections

HB 1494 would weaken those regulations even more by eliminating permitting requirements for:

  1. IDEM approval before a factory farm can built or expanded;
  2. public notice to impacted neighbors and local governments before a factory farm can be built or expanded; and
  3. disclosure of all owners and operators and their environmental histories before a factory farm can be built or expanded.

Eliminating these requirements strips IDEM of its ability to ensure setbacks and design requirements for factory farms are followed, prohibits impacted communities from having their voices heard, and prevents IDEM’s ability to ensure that bad actors are not allowed to operate factory farms in our state.
