Deep Roots: Fascism, Antifa, and Free Speech in the U.S.

Charter Oak Cultural Center is proud to once again welcome Professor Christopher Vials for “Deep Roots: Fascism, Antifa, and Free Speech in the United States.”

This talk reviews the history of fascist and antifascist currents in the United States from the 1920s to the present. It pays special attention to the middle class nature of fascism and the current debates over white nationalist rallies and free speech.

Chris Vials is the author of Haunted by Hitler: Liberals, the Left, and the Fight Against Fascism in the United States (2014) and co-editor of the forthcoming The U.S. Antifascism Reader (Verso Press, 2018). He is an Associate Professor of English at the University of Connecticut, where he also serves as Director of American Studies.
