Prevent Censorship In West Chicago
Call to Action – Support the West Chicago Public Library: Hate Group Confronts Library and Local LGBTQ Community
What’s Happening: On Monday, August 28, a group called the Illinois Family Institute will demand that the West Chicago Public Library Board remove the book This Day in June from it’s children’s section due to their belief that this book promotes LGBTQ tendencies and children should not have access to such material. The Illinois Family Institute, classified as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, is bringing members from outside the community to influence the Board.
Winner of the 2015 Notable Books for a Global Society, This Day in June is described by Amazon as such: “In a wildly whimsical, validating, and exuberant reflection of the LGBT community, This Day In June welcomes readers to experience a pride celebration and share in a day when we are all united. Also included is a Reading Guide chock-full of facts about LGBT history and culture, as well as a Note to Parents and Caregivers with information on how to talk to children about sexual orientation and gender identity in age-appropriate ways. This Day In June is an excellent tool for teaching respect, acceptance, and understanding of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people.”
A library should have material that is representative of all it’s community. Do not allow this marginalization of the West Chicago #LGBTQ community to occur.
How To Help: Attend the Library Board meeting to voice your opposition for the removal of this, or any book, from the West Chicago Library. Please attend on Monday, August 28 at 6:30pm to show the Library and LGBTQ community our support. We should not allow the voices of those outside our community to determine our values.
When: Monday, August 28, 2017 at 6:30 pm
Where: West Chicago Public Library – 118 W Washington St, West Chicago, IL 60185
Can’t Attend: If you are unable to attend but would still like your voice heard, please email the West Chicago Library Director, Ben Weseloh, at email@example.com prior to Monday’s meeting.
