Building a Movement for Human Rights: An Activist’s Guide
Date: September 24, 2017
Time: 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m.
Location: Library, Congregation B’nai Israel 253 Prospect Street, Northampton, MA
Trainer: Sara Weinberger
The Human Rights Movement is active around the world and has been used to address social and political injustice in all forms. Sadly, the language of human rights is more widely used outside the U.S. – yet the concept of human rights is a powerful tool for uniting people to take action to protect their own and others’ rights to be treated as people with dignity and worth. Using the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights as our focus, class participants will discuss: how to act locally to develop a culture whose residents and institutions embrace the articles spelled out in the Declaration, how to empower people through education to recognize and claim their rights as human beings, and how to enhance our sense of interdependence in the global community and our duty to respond when human rights are threatened.
Building a Movement for Human Rights is a free workshop taught by Sara Weinberger, M.S.W., professor emerita of social work at Western New England University.
