April, being sexual violence awareness month, is an important time to come together as a community to heal deeply embedded wounds involving gender disparity. Local 501c3 non profit organization, The Vermont Ibutwa Initiative, has inspired this practice.
Ibutwa means “renaissance” in Lega, the language of the Lega tribe of the Mwenga District, South Kivu. We seek to contribute to the rebirth of the people of the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) through raising awareness, medical treatment, and empowerment efforts.
Rebirth or Renaissance. This word was intentionally chosen because the 3 programs Ibutwa offers to survivors of sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo assists in creating better lifestyles. Medical services, education and sustainable livelihood opportunities are offered to recipients through Ibutwa to uplift women & children in the rape capital of the world. Ibutwa is planting seeds of hope for a brighter future. https://www.ibutwa.org/single-post/2016/04/29/Advancing-Sustainable-Livelihoods-through-Community-Gardens-1
