David Stocker And His Life As An Activist
David Stocker is an artist and musician. He has been an artist in residence with the Illinois Arts Council Agency since 1999, leading arts events across the Midwest. He developed and shared his Origins of Music curriculum with many thousands of young people, including Freeport Schools! David has co directed public art creations from the “Oceania” tile mural at Marshall School in Rockford to “The Grove” at Severson Dells, an award winning outdoor play & explore area.
David is an activist, engaged as a movement artist. From signage, to chants, to giant puppets & street theatre, he has led art-builds and workshops in preparation for demonstrations and actions relating to the social and environmental justice issues of our day.
David has traveled twice to Nogales EAU, and Sonora MX to create street theatre for the BorderMobilizations, bringing those powerful tools home to inform the public about immigration issues taking place in our own community.
He is a co founder of Forest City 350 and has led significant public art initiatives for the People’s Climate March, NoDAPL pipeline resistance, Standing Rock and the Whiting41. He co-created a ceremony for Earth healing, the Song of the Universe staged in Rockford in 2017. He is presently developing a touring music show for for teens in Milwaukee Schools.
In 2008, David joined a humanitarian accompaniment mission in the West Bank in Palestine. While studying the occupation, he met children in the South Hebron Hills. The illustrations from his journals of the people he met were recently shared in a Rockford gallery with art by Palestinian Youth.
